Hospitality English edition
The English your guests notice
Grammar for hotel, restaurant and tourism staff, with the reason behind every mistake in your own language.
What it is
Hospitality English is The Grammar Index for the people who look after guests: front desk and concierge, reservations and sales, restaurant and bar, housekeeping, and guest relations. It adds a Hospitality English section of 32 topics to the whole 316-topic library, built around the mistakes guests notice: tenses in service updates, articles in bookings, prepositions of time and place, polite offers and requests, questions, confirmation emails, words such as complimentary and complementary, apologies and replies to online reviews.
The mistake beside the fix
Every hotel example is a pair: a sentence with a common mistake, the corrected sentence beside it, and a short reason. There are 195 pairs, across the 32 hotel topics and 15 library topics such as articles, subject–verb agreement and modal verbs. Where a sentence is grammatical but too blunt to say to a guest, the pair is marked Too direct and Polite instead. The English is British, with the American usage noted where it differs.
Built for the job
- A path for your role: five role paths start with the topics each job uses most, and the eight general English levels follow.
- Spot the mistake: quick rounds of hotel sentences, right or wrong, with the correct version and the reason after every answer, for every role or just yours.
- The whole grammar library as well, with daily spaced-repetition drills, a five-question quiz, search and a Custom list.
- A free preview: ten hotel topics, two for each role, open in the browser with no key.
Read it in your language, hear it in English
The interface, every definition and the reason behind each hotel mistake appear in 42 languages, among them Spanish, Filipino, Arabic, Hindi, Portuguese, Indonesian, Chinese and Thai. The sentences themselves stay in English, because that is the English your guests hear, and a professionally voiced narrator reads every topic and example aloud at a speed you choose.
For hotels and training teams
A Team or Institution licence gives every member of staff a key of their own, either for two devices or for one, so a new starter can work through their role's path on their own phone. Hotel groups, hospitality schools and training providers: get in touch about licences for your teams.
